13th April, 2023

The Architects Association of Macau is honored to invite Professor Wang Shu, Department Chair of the Architecture Department of the China Academy of Art, famous Architect and Pulitzer Prize winner; and his wife Lu Wenyu, partner of the Architect Firm to come to the association for a visit. AAM President of Fellow Members Council Arch. Carlos Marreiros, GA President Arch. Ben Leong, BD President Arch. Christine Choi, BD Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu and etc. received them warmly and had an exchange meeting together. At the meeting, Prof. Wang shared his experience in architectural design and practice for many years. The participants were inspired and benefited a lot. On the same day, AAM organized a group of 25 members to attend the lecture “When Architecture Meets Nature - Aesthetics of Chinese Architecture”, given by Prof. Wang at the Macau Cultural Center to further understand his philosophy and persistence in design. To further promote exchanges with mainland and foreign architectural industries and expand the vision and level of local architects, AAM is planning to organize an architecture tour to Shanghai in the second half of this year and visit Prof. Wang Shu. It is also hoped to promote local architectural design through the visit.

Macau Institution of Engineers and Macau Association of Concrete Inspection, Maintenance and Waterproofing hosted jointly “Technical Seminar and Visit to The Phase 2 of Studio City”, inviting the representatives and members of the Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM) to participate. AAM President of Fellow Members Council Arch. Carlos Marreiros, President of the Members Assembly Arch. Ben Leong, President of the Board of Directors Arch. Christine Choi, Vice-Presidents Arch. Paulo Cheang and Arch. Donna Wu, etc. participated.


24th February, 2023

AAM general assembly 2022 took place at its premises. GA President Arch. Ben Leong chaired the meeting. The annual activity report and financial report introduced by the Board of Directors was passed after the President of the Supervisory Board Arch. Eddie Wong delivered the supervisory report. Arch. Carlos Marreiros, President of the Fellow Members Council also presented in the Assembly. Amendments to the Constitution were also introduced at the General Assembly and passed unanimously. This revision of the Constitution is to rationalize and expand the number of members in each committee within the existing organizational structure in response to the development of affairs of the association and the actual situation in Macau. In addition, Arch. Ben Leong and Arch. Johnathan Wong were approved to be the AAM fellow members, due to their contribution to the Association and Macau for many years.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM) held a press conference at the premise of Macau Association of Building Constructors and Developers. President of the Board of Directors Arch. Christine Choi represented the Architects Association of Macau to attend. The press conference introduced the impact of the COVID19 epidemic on the construction industry at the end of 2022, as well as called on government projects to appropriately extend the construction period as appropriate, so that other private projects could follow this practice. It is hoped that the end of the epidemic and the opening of the market could attract foreign investment and stimulate the private construction market.

Representing the Architects Association of Macau, BD Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu and Board Member Arch. Gor Si attended “Forum and Prize Presentation of The Safety Awards on Civil Construction 2022”. AAM is one of the co-organizers. Arch. Si participated in the Jury of the awards.

“AAM 2022 Architecture Exhibition and Prize Presentation of Macau Architecture Awards” took place at Albergue SCM. Honourable guests Leong Iok Sam, Director of Fire Services Bureau; Lam Wai Hou, Director of Public Works Bureau; Mak Tat Io, Deputy Director of Lands and Urban Construction Bureau; Lao Cho Un, Deputy Director of Sport Bureau; Lam Wai Ip, Division Head of Cultural Affairs Bureau; and Wong Pit Wa, Division Head of Municipal Affairs Bureau were invited to present awards to the winners of the competition. Wong Chio In, Division Head of Education and Youth Development Bureau and AAM BD President Ar. Christine Choi presented certificates of appreciation to the jury members. A group of members, guests and friends attended, making the event joyful and lively. The Macau Architecture Awards (MMA) is a bi-year event, includes three categories: Residential Projects, Public Amenity Buildings and Conservation Projects. The jury section of the Awards had completed on 27th August, 2022. The jury panel was composed of: Ar. Choi Ieng Va, Department Head from Public Works Bureau; Ar. Chan Chi Lek from Cultural Affairs Bureau; MABCD BD President Mr. Mok Chi Wai; Ar. Zheng Jianyi, Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Humanities and Arts of the Macau University of Science and Technology; and AAM GA President Ar. Ben Leong. Winner of the Gold Award in the category of Public Amenity Buildings was the “Athletes Training and Development Centre” of Eddie Wong & Associates Limited and its another project “Nursing College” won the Honourable Mention. In the Conservation Projects category, “The Extension of Pousada de Sao Tiago” of Eddie Wong & Associates Limited won the Gold Award, while “Belive & More” of A Design Architecture Limited won the Honourable Mention. As for the category of Residential Projects, there were two Honourable Mentions, e.g.: “Mount Park” of A Design Architecture Limited; “Waterfront Duet” of Eddie Wong & Associates Limited and P&T Architects and Engineers Ltd. Macau Branch. Ar. Ben Leong and Ar. Christine Choi delivered the opening speech and officially kicked off the event. After the Awards Presentation Ceremony, the representatives of the awarded architectural firms guided the guests to visit the exhibition and introduced their projects. Other guests attended the event included Dr. Chou Kuok Hei, representative of Health Bureau; Mr. Willie Tay, representative of the Sociedade Hoteleira e de Turismo S. Tiago, Limitada; Ms. Tiffany Chong, Director and Vice General Manager of Desenvolvimento e Fomento Predial Dong Fu Ye, Lda.; Mr. Li Chengjia and Mr. Zhang Zhiguang, representatives of Ellsworth Macau Limitada; as well as representatives from the associations of the building industry. This award ceremony and exhibition were sponsored by the Culture Development Fund of Macau SAR Government.

Being invited by Cultural Affairs Bureau, Dr. Jixiang Shan, former Director of the Palace Museum, came Macau to give the public lecture “Power of the Culture – Assign Vitalities to the Resources of Cultural Heritage”. Dr. Shan explained the cultural relics of the Forbidden City and their connection with daily life. AAM organized 15 members to attend.

Organised by Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) - the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) and co-organised by the Architects Association of Macau, the “18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia – Collateral Event from Macau, China”, the result of Open Call for Exhibition Proposals was announced. It will feature a team composed of Jimmy Wardhana, Choi Wan Sun, Lin Ian Neng and Tong Tou U, in the Biennale in Venice, Italy, in May 2023. The collateral event, themed “RE-CALIBRATION – In Search of a New Critical Regionalism”, aims at exploring the urban and architectural development of Macau.Founded in 1980, the “International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia” is one of the most important architectural events today. It has been the fourth time that IC has organised the participation of Macau’s architectural sector and related practitioners under the name of “Macau, China” since 2014. In order to encourage architectural talent in Macau to make breakthrough innovations and to increase exchanges between the industry in Macau and their international peers, the Organiser held the “18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia – Collateral Event from Macau, China” Open Call for Exhibition Proposals. The Jury Committee was composed of the President of IC, Deland Leong Wai Man and four experienced architects from Hong Kong and Macau, including the former President of the World Association of Chinese Architects, Eddie Wong Yue Kai; the President of the AAM Fellow Members Council, Carlos Marreiros; the Director of the Macau Urban Renewal Limited, Johnathan C. Y. Wong; and the Founder of Atelier Global Limited, Frankie Lui, who reviewed in two rigorous evaluation of the nine participating proposals. The proposal “RE-CALIBRATION – In Search of a New Critical Regionalism” by Jimmy Wardhana was awarded the Gold Prize, the proposal “Bamborella” by Alexandre Leong Marreiros was awarded the Silver Prize, and the proposal “Earth Life: Separation and Convergence” by Sou Un Teng was awarded the Bronze Prize. No proposals were awarded the merit awards.

Macau Juvenile Legal Science Association, Macau Construction Association, the Architects Association of Macau and the Macau Institution of Engineers jointly hosted “Seminar on Construction Law” at the Macau Young Entrepreneur Incubation Centre. Representing AAM, Arch. Jimmy Wardhana, Member of the Board of Directors, participated into the event as one of the speakers.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA and APMCCM) hosted “Seminar on the Development of Quantity Surveying in Macau and the Integration with the Greater Bay Area and International Certification” at Mr. Ho In Memorial Hall of the Macau Chamber of Commerce. AAM GA President Arch. Ben Leong attended the event. This seminar is the first lesson of the third “Macau Quantity Surveying Technician Course”. A number of government departments and industry professionals were invited as honorable speakers.

The jury panel which was composed of 5 persons, namely: Choi Ieng Va, Department Head from Public Works Bureau; Chan Chi Lek, architect, representative of Cultural Affairs Bureau; MABCD BD President Mok Chi Wai, Zheng Jian Yi, Assistant Professor of Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macao University of Science and Technology; and Ar. Ben Leong, AAM GA President, carried out the review session to select the projects of “2022 Macao Architecture Awards”. Among the six entries received, two Gold Awards and four Awards of Excellence were selected.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM), was invited by Office of the Secretary for Transport and Public Works and Public Works Bureau, to visit the template of common pipeline ducts and the construction site of the Fourth Macau - Taipa Sea Bridge at the new urban Zone A. AAM President of the Members Assembly Ar. Ben Leong, Vice-President Ar. Johnathan Wong, President of the Board of Directors Ar. Christine Choi, Vice-Presidents Ar. Paulo Cheang and Ar. Donna Wu, etc. joined into the visit. According to the introduction of Sam Weng Chon, the Subdirector of Public Works Bureau, an annular common pipeline duct which will be divided into two types: double-cabin type and single-cabin type, will be laid under the main road in Zone A. There are special openings to allow access for maintenance to avoid repeated excavation of the road surface. Micro-common ducts will be laid under footpaths. Communication cables and power supply cables, etc. are placed in the common pipeline ducts, except for gas pipes, rainwater pipes and sewage pipes.

Donna Wu attended the Seminar “Foresight and Prospect on Macau’s Urban Construction” hosted by Macau Association of Building Contractors and Developers for celebrating its 75th Anniversary.

At the invitation of the Macau Institute of Engineers (AEM), the Architects Association of Macau organized members to form a basketball team to participate in the “Greater Bay Area Sports Friendly Tournament” hosted by AEM for celebrating its 35th Anniversary. Teams from Public Works Bureau and Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR also participated.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA and APMCCM) hosted the Ceremony of Awarding the Practice Recommendation of “Macau Quantity Surveying Technicians 2021” and Dinner Party at Macau Tower. Arch. Eddie Wong, Supervisory Board President of the Architects Association of Macau, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the Six Associations. Lam Wai Hou, Director of Public Works Bureau, was invited to present practice recommendations to qualified trainees. As distinguished guests, Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works; Cheong Chui Ling, Director of Secretary for Transport and Public Works Office; Lai Weng Leong, Director of Lands and Urban Construction Bureau; and directors of various government departments under Secretary for Transport and Public Works attended the event.

In addition to professional and academic exchanges, the Architects Association of Macau also communicates with various organizations of different industries in Macau through various cultural, recreational and sports activities to build friendships. This year, AAM organized again members to participate in “May Fourth Youth Table Tennis Team Invitational Tournament” hosted by Youth Association of Returned Overseas Chinese Macau.

AAM organized a group of directors, supervisors and members, led by Supervisory Board President Eddie Wong, President of the Fellow Members Council Carlos Marreiros, GA President Ben Leong and BD President Christine Choi, to visit “Exhibition about the Education of National Security” at Complex of Service Platform for Trade Cooperation Between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries.

The Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) held a press conference at the premise of Macao Association of Building Constructors and Developers. AEM GA President Eddie Joe Wu, AAM BD President Christine Choi, MCA BD President Lo Chi Cheong, MABCD BD Vice-President Vong Kock Kei, AECEM GA Vice-President Fernando Tse and APMCCM Supervisory Board President Long U Hong represented to preside at the conference.
At first, a report with 3 issues was introduced: 1) participation in public affairs initiatives such as the revision of relevant regulations; 2) technical training courses; 3) Industrial Accident Support Fund. Among them, the Fund has distributed, since 2019, one-off support donations to the families of nine victims of industrial accidents. The start-up fund in 2018 was 1.2 million patacas, and the current rollover balance is more than 600,000 patacas.
Additionally, the Six Associations pointed out that the construction industry in Macao has at least 20 years of sustainable and stable development with the construction of the Macao new reclaimed urban zone and the ICZ and the cooperation between GBA. There is still a need for engineers, architects, construction technicians, all kinds of craftsmen. Therefore, the industry accesses into schools from time to time, to promote and encourage students to study engineering. The purpose is to hope that more local people will be engaged in the construction industry.

AAM general assembly 2021 took place at its premises. GA President Arch. Ben Leong chaired the meeting. The annual activity report and financial report introduced by the Board of Directors was passed after the President of the Supervisory Board Arch. Eddie Wong delivered the supervisory report.
The association also made the election of the new council for 2021-2023. By the unanimous approval of the members presented, Arch. Ben Leong continues to be the GA President while Arch. Carlos Marreiros and Arch. Johnathan Wong being the GA Vice-Presidents; Arch. Christine Choi is re-elected as BD President while Arch. Paulo Cheang, Arch. Jay Ho and Arch. Donna Wu being BD Vice-Presidents; Arch. Eddie Wong and Arch. Harry Mok are the President and Vice-President of Supervisory Board; Arch. Carlos Marreiros and Arch. José Maneiras continue to be the President and Vice-President of Fellow Members Council.
Christine Choi, BD President for the new term, first thanked the members for their trust and support. Then she introduced the work plan for 2022 on behalf of the board. The board will continue the purpose of the association, focusing on the rights and interests of members, and strengthen communication and cooperation with all parties based on the principle of “professional sustainable development”, to open up more development opportunities for members and the industry. President of Fellow Members Council Carlos Marreiros also delivered a speech at the meeting, encouraging members to actively serve the society.

AAM hosted the series of celebration for the “2021 World Architecture Day”, including seminar of CPD, exhibition, prize presentation of Architectural Design Competition for Young Architects and dinner party, at Oasis of Galaxy Hotel. More than 100 members, guests and friends participated.
AAM BD President Christine Choi delivered a welcome speech. First of all, she thanked the team of directors and supervisors for their active efforts in the past year, and the support of members, the government and different organizations to the association. Summarizing the 2021 works of the association, despite the COVID 19 epidemic, thirteen online and offline seminars, as well as various architectural competitions and exhibitions were successfully held.
The results of “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macao: The Vertical Campus” - Architectural Design Competition for Young Architects was announced and the awards ceremony took place at the same event that evening. Honourable guests Leong Iok Sam, Director of Fire Services Bureau; Leong Wai Man, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Luís Manuel Silva Madeira de Carvalho, Deputy Coordinator of Infrastructure Development Office; and Arch. Eddie Wong, AAM Supervisory Board President were invited to present awards to the winners of the competition. AAM President of Fellows Council Arch. Carlos Marreiros and President of General Assembly Arch. Ben Leong presented certificates of appreciation to the jury members and to the rest of teams which participated into the competition.
Other VIPs including: Cheang Kuan Hoi, Division Head of Institute of Municipal Affairs; Wong Chio In, Division Head of Education and Youth Development Bureau; the jury of the competition and the representatives of the associations of the industry attended the event.

In order to promote the mutual integration of urban planning and construction between Zhuhai and Macao under the framework of the GBA, and strengthen the cooperation between the construction industries of the two places, a delegation of Zhuhai Institute of Urban Planning and Design led by Vice-President Chen Sining, visited AAM. AAM President of General Assembly Arch. Ben Leong, President of the Board Arch. Christine Choi, Vice-President Arch. Jay Ho, board members Arch. Mimi Cheung and Arch. Jimmy Wardhana received them warmly. The current situation about the professional practice in different places was discussed during the meeting. It gives a reference to Macao architects how to participate into the works in Zhuhai and GBA. AAM also suggested that some small-scale projects should be used as pilot ones to give Macao architects the opportunity to participate in the design works in Zhuhai.
The Zhuhai delegation also included Chief Architect Chen Wei, Chief Engineer Office Director Yang Jiong, Vice Chief Engineer Lin Yaozong, Vice Chief Architect Ji Peidong and Li Li, Assistant of the Director, accomplishing with Zheng Jian Yi, Assistant Professor of Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macao University of Science and technology.

A number of representatives of the Architects Association of Macao participated in various activities of the 19th Asian Conference of Architects of the ARCASIA through online. This conference was jointly hosted by the Chinese Society of Architects and Tongji University. It was originally scheduled to be held in Shanghai in 2020, but was postponed for one year due to the COVID 19. The conference was changed to an online mode to allow architects and industry professionals from all over Asia to participate. The five-day conference included a number of activities such as the ARCASIA Council meeting, academic conferences and student Jamboree.
The academic conference with the theme of “Sharing & Regeneration” was chaired by Professor Wu Jiang, ARCASIA Vice Chairman and former Executive Vice President of Tongji University, and delivered an opening welcome speech. A number of well-known architects and scholars from China, ARCASIA regions and the United States were invited as keynote speakers. In addition to the keynote presentations, a number of breakout workshops were organized.
Representing AAM, GA President Ben Leong and BD President Christine Choi attended the Council Meeting and presented the AAM’s activity report, introducing the difficulties and countermeasures encountered by Macao under the epidemic.
In the student Jamboree this year, AAM invited nine tutors and students from the architecture related faculty of University of Saint Joseph and Macao University of Science and Technology to participate, to allow local students to contact and communicate with the ones of foreign architecture schools, so as to enhance the international perspective and level of local architecture students.

Representing AAM, board member Arch. Ryan Leong attended the award presentation ceremony of “BIM Awards 2021” hosted by AUTODESK in Hong Kong. As the supporting organization, AAM sent its board member Arch. Jimmy Wardhana to work on the Advisory Panel of the event.

The opening of the exhibition of AAM Architectural Design Competition for Young Architects 2021 took place at Macao Science Centre. Chaired by AAM Supervisory Board President Eddie Wong, Fellow Council President Carlos Marreiros, GA President Ben Leong and BD President Christine Choi, honourable guests namely: Lam Wai Hou, Coordinator of Infrastructure Development Office; Leong Wai Man, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Cheong Hong Fat, Deputy Director of Macao Science Centre; as well as the representatives of the Construction Industry Development Concern Group were invited to unveil the event. Attending guests also included representatives of the associations of the industry, representatives of the university’s architecture-related faculties and AAM members.
In order to activate the atmosphere of the architectural design in Macao, AAM organizes an architectural design competition for young architects every two years. The theme of the competition 2021 is “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macao: The Vertical Campus”. A commercial area site in District A of the new urban reclamation integrated with the Creative Gateway Park is selected as the site for the competition. The workplace campus planning shall demonstrate the design of a synergetic environment to allow different government entities and department to collaborate, with appropriate proportion of private and segregated space. The purpose of the competition is to select a reasonable, creative, and artistic entry that reflects the reimagination of future workplace and provide food for thought to the possibility of a vertical workplace campus in Macao.
A total of eight entries were received for the competition. In addition to meeting the established functional requirements, some of the works also considered different aspects such as location feature, urban landscape, environmental protection, energy saving, and response to the epidemic, providing many practical design ideas and showing the extraordinary creativity of the young architects in Macao.
This exhibition was sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and supported by the Macao Science Centre.

World Association of Chinese Architects held its 2021 Annual Meeting and a Symposium “Cities and the Future, Green and Design” in Qingdao from October 15th to 17th. Some members of the Architects Association of Macao participated, among which Ben Leong, the GA President delivered a speech.

The jury session of “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macao: The Vertical Campus” - AAM Architectural Design Competition for Young Architects 2021, was carried out. The competition received overwhelming response, with a total of eight teams submitting entries. The Jury panel was composed of 7 persons, namely: Chan Chi Lek, architect, representative of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Choi Ieng Va, architect, representative of Infrastructure Development Office; Dr. Morgan Yang, Engineer and Vice President of AECOM; Lee Hay Ip, President of AECEM Board of Directors; Zheng Jian Yi, Assistant Professor of Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macao University of Science and Technology; Nuno Soares, Senior Lecturer of Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Saint Joseph; and Christine Choi, President of AAM Board of Directors.The list of awarding entries selected by Jury is as follows: First Prize: the team of Wu Kim Kam, Huang Dan Feng and Chen Si Ming; Second Prize: the team of Rogério André Santos de Oliveira, Sara Maria Pacheco das Neves and Chu Hou San; Third Prize: the team of Tong Hong Wan, Chang Ngan Hong and Wong Hok Ieng; Honourable Mention: the team of Ricardo Filipe Dos Santos Meireles, André Roldão Salvador Tribolet and Jorge Cordeiro Dos Santos.

AAM participated positively to vote in the Legislative Assembly Election 2021 of Macao SAR.

With the aim to stimulate the architectural design spirit of Macao, Architects Association of Macao (AAM) continue to organize the architectural design competition for young architects. Briefing session of the 2021 Competition was hosted through online (zoom meeting) and offline (AAM Premise), presided by OC Arch. Jimmy Wardhana and Arch. Jay Ho. With the Macao SAR Government expecting to withdraw from office lease in the next three years saving hundreds of millions in annual rent, there are currently many ongoing developments of government offices. Not only is the construction of new office buildings seen as positive from economical savings point of view, but as young architects we are intrigued to see the possibility reimagining the future workplace of Macau by introducing a vertical workplace campus. Therefore, the theme of the competition this year is “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macau: The Vertical Campus”. The purpose of the competition is to select a reasonable, creative, and artistic entry that reflects the reimagination of future workplace and provide food for thought to the possibility of a vertical workplace campus in Macao. Manuel Lam was invited to be the speaker, sharing information about the employment prospects and development plans of the profession on architectural design with Macao students who are studying oversea.

Organized by the Architects Association of Macao and co-organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the opening ceremony of the “Cross-Strait Architectural Design Exhibition” was held in the lobby exhibition hall of the Macao Science Centre. VIP guests: Zuo Xianghua, Deputy Director of the Economic Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR; Leong Wai Man, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Mak Tat Io, Head of Urban Planning Department; Sio Han Pan, Director of Macao Science Centre; representatives of the Macao Construction Industry Concern Group, as well as AAM GA President Ben Leong; GA Vice-President Johnathan Wong; BD President Christine Choi and BD Vice-President Donna Wu presided the ribbon cutting ceremony. Other guests attending the ceremony also included professionals and scholars from associations, institutions on architectural design and construction industries. With the theme “Shape the Shapeless: Cross-Strait Architects and the Architecture of the Belt and Road and Africa”, HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design and Symposium and Awards (CADSA) 2019 launched and completed successfully. Architects from the “Belt and Road” countries and regions interact with architects from Mainland China, Taipei, Hong Kong and Macao. As a co-organizer, the Architects Association of Macao participated actively in the event and exhibited award-winning projects in Macao, to share and learn about outstanding architectural design from various places, and to promote communication with outside professionals. This exhibition exhibited 24 works that won gold, silver, bronze and merit awards in the categories for professionals and for students of the CADSA 2019.

Organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and co-organized by the Architects Association of Macao, the “Connectivities: Living Beyond the Boundaries – Macao and the Greater Bay Area, the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia – Works of the Collateral Event of Macao, China”, was inaugurated at the Taipa Houses. The opening ceremony was officiated by Mok Ian Ian, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; Yin Rutao, Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR; Arch. Carlos Marreiros, the curator of the exhibition, President of AAM Fellows Council; and Arch. Ben Leong, AAM GA President. The exhibition featured four exhibits by young local architects and urban planners Ho Ting Fong, Che Chi Hong, Lao Man Si and Chan Ka Tat, which participated in the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. The Macao Pavilion at “Biennale” had previously been opened to public since May 22nd this year. Their works interpreted the connection between architecture, reclamation areas, collective memories and urban life from multiple perspectives, presenting the imagination of cross-border life in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to audiences from all over the world, exploring the infinite possibilities of “connection”, to echo the theme “How Will We Live Together?” of the “Biennale”. This is the fourth time for the Cultural Affairs Bureau to organize Macao architects to participate in the world’s premier “International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia” under the name “Macao, China”, and strive to show the creations of Macao architects on the international stage. Carlos Marreiros was invited to serve as the curator of the Macao Pavilion, and lead the team with the four young people mentioned above to participate into “Biennale”. The 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia was originally scheduled to be held in 2020. The event is postponed to this year due to the pandemic of the COVID-19.

The Macao Association of Engineers (AEM) was responsible for the coordination and arrangement, and with the assistance of the Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology (GDAST), a group of 40 people from the Macao Construction Industry Concern Group (MCICG) formed the “Macao Construction Industry Investigation Prefabricated Building Delegation” to go to Guangzhou for related thematic visits and learning (AAM CPD 5/2021), that provided continuous professional development training for the industry to match the Macao SAR Government’s policy of promoting prefabricated construction technology. The delegation visited prefab factories, construction quality and safety inspection centre and had also a meeting with the principals of GDAST. The delegation was coordinated by Eng. Clement Sio, AEM BD President with the participants of the other leaders of MCICG including Arch. Ben Leong, AAM GA President, as well as Government representatives from the Office for the Infra-structures Development and Environmental Protection Bureau, and etc..

MGM Cotai was awarded the highest rating certification – Three-star Green Building Operation Label, issued by the China Green Building and Energy Saving (Macau) Association. It is currently the only mega complex building and hotel in Macao that gains the Three-star Certification in both Green Building Design and Operation Label. In order to promote the development of green buildings in Macao and the growth of related talents, MGM held the “Seminar on Technology Application and Development of Green Buildings in China and Macao”, at Grand Ballroom on the first floor of MGM Cotai. At the same venue, the Certificate Presentation Ceremony took place. Eng. Chen Guangxian, Deputy General Manager of China Construction Engineering (Macau) Company Limited; and Dr. Edison Zhang, National China Green Building Label (GBL) Assessor from Green Building Research Center of Chinese Society for Urban Studies, were invited to be the speakers. They introduced the technologies and development of green buildings in China and cited the eco-friendly structures of MGM COTAI as a role model. The seminar was concluded with a tour of the hotel, enabling the participants to view its green facilities and technologies. Being one of the co-organizer of the seminar (AAM CPD 2/2021), the Architects Association of Macao organized members, included Carlos Marreiros, President of Fellow Council; Christine Choi, BD President and etc., to participate.

AAM President Arch. Ben Leong, President of the Board Arch. Christine Choi and Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu received, at AAM premise, the President of Cultural Affairs Bureau Mok Ian Ian, Vice President Leong Wai Man and Advisors of Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Lo Hou Chi and Wong Sai Peng. The main purpose of this meeting was to exchange views on the plan of the new Central Library. IC expected to build a platform for cooperation with the local construction industry on various development plans of the Bureau. AAM expressed the concern of the Association and some members on the overall development of the new Central Library project. AAM also emphasized the need for the government to foster a sustainable environment for local professionals to practice and flourish in order to cultivate local talents and that the local architects and their contributions would be fundamental to the development of Macao. ICM had just announced that the new Central Library will be located in the former Hotel Estoril and exposed four conceptual design plans provided by international architectural design team which invited by ICM.

AAM President Arch. Ben Leong and Vice-President of the Board Arch. Donna Wu received warmly the delegation of Huayi led by Vice-President Arch. Lin Yi. The current situation about the professional practice in different places was discussed during the meeting. It gives a reference to Macao architects how to participate into the works in GBA. Huayi Design Consulting Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shenzhen with many branches spreading in China, is registered in Hong Kong. It is a national-level high-tech enterprise holding “Class A Engineering Design Qualification” and “Urban and Rural Planning Preparation Class A Qualification”.

AAM GA President Ben Leong, BD President Christine Choi, BD Vice-Presidents Paulo Cheang and Donna Wu, board members Jimmy Wardhana and Manuel Lam received warmly the delegation of the Industrial and Commercial Association of the Northern Zone of Macao, led by the President Mr. Wong Kin Chong and President of the Board of Directors Mr. Ma Kin Cheong. Views on the urban renewal planning of the Northern District, which have a vision to build a diverse community that is livable, suitable for travel, suitable for business and pleasure, were exchanged during the meeting, with the aim to gather professional opinions from various fields and to advise the Government.

The Macao Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) held a press conference at the premise of Macao Association of Building Constructors and Developers. AAM BD President Christine Choi, AEM BD President Clement Sio, AECEM BD President Lei Hei Ip, MABCD Supervisory Board President Tony Lao, MCA Chief Secretary Lo Chi Hou and APMCCM BD President Sio Tong Man represented to preside at the conference. At first the concern group explained the impact of COVID-19 to the industry that lack of personnel and materials supply due to restrictions on the boarder and therefore, suggested the authorities to give priority to local industry to participate in public works and to reduce part of the industry’s taxes and other expenses, in order to reduce the economic burden of the industry during this period. In line with the government’s launch of “Relief for Work”, the six associations and Labour Affairs Bureau jointly organized technical training courses to promote the upward mobility of local workers and cultivate talents. It was also briefed that the leaders of the six associations had a meeting on January 21, with Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works and Chan Pou Ha, Director of Land, Public Works and Transportation Bureau.

With the co-organizer of AAM, The Macao Museum of Arts organized the proposals calling for “The 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia –Exhibits from Macao, China”. In order to better promote the architecture of Macao to the international stage and to better fit the theme of the Biennale, finally, based on the opinions of the jury, Carlos Marreiros, a senior architect and famous artist in Macao, was invited to serve as the curator of the Macao Exhibition, and formed a team with four natives young professionals from the construction sector with experience in urban planning, i.e. Ho Teng Fong, Che Chi Hong, Lau Man Si and Chan Ka Tat, who were selected from the participants of the proposals calling. The theme of Macao Exhibition is “How will Macao live in the future: Living beyond the boundaries, Macao, Greater Bay Area”. The 17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, with the theme “How Will We Live Together?”, is originally scheduled to be held in the summer of 2020. The organizer announced that the event will be postponed for one year due to the pandemic of the COVID-19.

AAM BD President Ar. Christine Choi, BD Vice-President Ar. Jay Ho and board member Ar. Jimmy Wardhana went to the Cantonese Opera Art Museum in Liwan District, Guangzhou to participate in the “Shiwan Ridge Ceramics Skills Workshop”. The workshop was jointly organized by the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, the Institute of Historical Environmental Protection and Renewal of South China University of Technology and the Lingnan Folk Arts Platform of South China Agricultural University, with the support organizations including Hong Kong Historic Building Conservation Association, the Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists, Macao Institute for Tourism Studies and the Architects Association of Macao. The one-day workshop was composed of two parts. In the first part, three speakers from SCUT and SCAU, i.e. Xu Zili, Gao Wei and Xiao Lu, introduced the overall process from the planning, design to construction of the Cantonese Opera Art Museum and how the traditional architectural decoration crafts of Southern China such as Shiwan ceramics, grey plastic, stone carving, brick carving, wood carving, Caozhou fragmented ceramics and wood painting, were applied in the project. The learners were guided to visit and appreciate those masterpieces there. In the second part of the workshop, He Zhanchuan, Shiwan pottery art master, Zhongshan inheritors of intangible heritages, who has worked on those ceramics decorations in the museum, presented his knowledge and skill on traditional Shiwan pottery art. The learners had the chance to experience by themselves the simple pottery making process. This workshop is one of the Co-Crafts with Masters workshops series where the Hong Kong Institute of Architects collaborated with HKHBCA, held in various venues in GBA. Co-Crafts with Masters is related to a series of public engagement events called Co-Vitalize Our Heritage, aiming to promote the knowledge about architectural conservation and the traditional building techniques and crafts.

The inauguration of the 8th Shenzhen and Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture 2019 (UABB) and the Macao Exhibition at the same event took place in Shenzhen. Ding Qiang, UABB OC Secretary; Choi Kin Long, Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau Department Head; Yang Jing, Vice-President of Macao Urban Planning Institute; Christine Choi, AAM BD President and Chris Tong, the Curator, President of Planwish Architects and Consultants Co.,Ltd. presented in the opening of the Macao Exhibition. The theme of current UABB is “Urban Interactions”. The event lasts for three months and its main venue is located at Shenzhen Futian Railway Station. Exhibitors from various counties around the world come together and bring works that integrate architecture, art and design and explore in-depth on the phenomenon of linkage and interlocking among cities, between cities and people, and among people in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the process of deepening global interconnection and regional integration. The team of Planwish Architects and Consultants Co.,Ltd., which has won the gold award in the stage of proposals calling organized by ICM, is responsible to curate the Macao Exhibition with “City - Gate” as the design theme. “Gates” which are everywhere in Macao, are used as symbols to construct a parametric-aided 3D-printed installation sculpture composed of arches, the GBA urban context and the grid pattern of WeChat Moments. They symbolize the close connection, mutual influence and coordinated development of Macao and other cities in the GBA in both material and virtual space, reflecting the importance of Macao’s strategic positioning in the development of the GBA. The exhibition aims to arouse people’s thinking and imagination on the preservation of Macao’s local culture in the rapidly increasing urban interaction.

AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA and APMCCM (the Six Associations) jointly held a dinner party at Macao Tower, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s handover. VIPs: Zhu Hong, representative of Liaison Office; Zhu Xi, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works; officers of various Government bureaus, leaders of various associations and etc. attended the dinner. MABCD President Paul Tse delivered a speech on behalf of the 6 associations. AECEM President José Chui delivered a toast and held a toast with the leaders of the 6 associations and the guests. We wish that the Macao SAR will enter a new and glorious chapter under the leadership of the fifth Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and his management team.

With the aim of encourage the development of local young architect and enhancing their creativity on contribution to the rehabilitation of old urban, AAM organized again the architectural design competition for young architect in 2019 with topic of “Rua de Cinco de Outubro Neighborhood Revitalization and Redevelopment Concept Design Competition”. The jury panel was composed of Eng. Ho Man Him, Department Head of Public Roads and Drainage of IAM; Ar. Chan Chi Lek, representative of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Mr. Lei Cheok Kuan, President of the Industry and Commerce Federation of Macau Central and Southern District; Ar. Yvonne Ieong, Director of BEAM Society Limited; Ar. Paulo Cheang, Vice-President of AAM Board of Directors. Among the 7 entries, our Jury Panel decided to have one Gold Award, one Silver Award and three Honorable Prizes. This competition got the sponsor of Cultural Affairs Bureau.

A group of 5 representatives from Nam Kwong Natural Gas Company Limited visited AAM, welcome by our GA President Arch. Ben Leong, BD President Arch. Johnathan Wong, BD Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu and board member Arch. Ryan Lai. Nam Kwong is the utility company currently providing natural gas for Macao in both public and private sectors. The delegation shared with us knowledge and advantages of natural gas over LPG, as well as future potential of the natural resources in long term which would enlighten us on choice of new energy.

11th August, 2018

A review sharing session “Vicente Bravo – The Man and the Architect”, organized by Albergue SCM with the co-organizers AAM and CA Cultura, took place at Albergue SCM. The Secretary for the Transport and Public Works Engineer Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, the local architects and engineers attended. Ar. Carlos Marreiros, Ar. Jay Ho, Ar. José Maneiras, Ar. Paulo Cheang, Ar. Maria José Freitas, Ar. Nuno Soares, Eng. José Silveirinha and etc. gave the homage to Vicente Bravo, sharing his life story and the experience on working with him. Vicente Bravo worked in Macao as an architect for over 30 years and contributed to Macao by designing numerous important architecture projects, including the 1991 Macao Architecture Award project the Peony Court of Flower City Taipa, the pavilion provisional of the handover ceremony in 1999, which is widely known as “The Lantern” and etc. His pursuit of architecture is a model for our younger generation. AAM acknowledges Architect Vincente Bravo for his contribution to Macao and to our profession of architecture design. Architect Vicente Bravo passed away in Lisbon on 28th July, 2018, at the age of 72.

Macao Space Development Planning Seminar

Organized by Macao University of Science and Technology (MUST), the “Macao Space Development Planning Seminar” was held on March 8, 2018 at the MUST Library. With the invitation of the organizing unit, Vice Presidents Paulo Cheang and Donna Wu and Director Ryan Lai represented AAM to attend this activity. This seminar is one of the academic exchange activities of the “2018 Joint of Postgraduate of Seven Schools Design Camp: Macao Space Development Planning Seminar Activity”, inviting Huaqiao University Vice President Liu Gong, Professor Zheng Zhi, Qinghua University Professor Xu Mouyan, Japan Institute of Architects President, Waseda University Professor Nobuaki Furuya, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Zhang Lufeng, Chongqing University Professor Deng Suyang, Tunghai University Professor Kuo Chi-Jeng, six well known domestic and overseas experts and scholars from the fields of architecture and city planning; and also inviting guest representatives of related societies and academic institutions from Macao, including Office of Policy Studies of the MSAR Government Prof. Mi Jian, Association for Macao Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection President Cheang Kok Keong, Macao Urban Development Institute President Chan Leong, Macao Association of Architects and Civil Engineers of Huaqiao University President Ao Weng Kong and locals experts, as well as MUST Vice President Dr. Tong Ka Lok, Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Arts Prof. Zhang Zhiqing, Vice Dean Prof. Ma Quan, Assistant Dean Samantha Chiang, Prof. Ung Vai Meng, Associate Professor Wen Kuo Hsun, Institute for Social and Cultural Research Director Lin Guangzhi, MUST Alumni Federation representative Lo Cheok Meng and so on. Starting from Macao’s history of urban space development and the planning background of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, exploring Macao urban space features, development ideas of foreign cities’ bay area, this seminar analyses the future of Macao urban space development as well. The main guest speakers, Nobuaki Furuya, Cheang Kok Keong, Lam Kuang Chi and etc. presented their subject reports, then the audiences had a discussion with the guests. AAM Vice President Paulo Cheang and Prof. Nobuaki Furuya carried out a discussion. Paulo Cheang stated, limited by the requirements, the Macao old town areas have rather narrow space and also stand many old architectures, contradiction exists between city development and the conservation of historical town, how to balance between development and conserving is a topic worth to discuss on. Nobuaki Furuya believes that Macao old town areas possesses special cultures and the feature of diversity, both redeveloping or entirely conserving the area may not be suitable, he pointed out that referring to the experience of Tokyo, selecting some places of the old town areas possessing cultural features and expanding and activating it, thereby showing the diversity of Macao and specific special cultural features. In addition, Prof. Liu Gong and Prof. Ung Wai Meng and guests each gave suggestions on how to balance between development and conserving historical town areas, how to conserve Macao culture’s inner strength and spread it through the new urban areas, as well as how to make good use of surrounding sea areas and more. Finally, Prof. Ma Quan gave a brief summary speech to the seminar, proposed the vision of Macao urban space development from an international view, looking forward to Macao’s initiative and advancing the development opportunity of the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” through “Belt and Road Initiative”, becoming the “Maritime City” with most historical heritage.
